Porsche 911 M42 Martini stripe decals, mapped by hand
Bicester Sports & Classics asked us to supply and fit M42 Martini stripe decals to a white Porsche 911. Here’s how we mapped the kit by hand.
Bicester Sports & Classics and DS Automotives asked us to supply and fit an M42 Martini stripe to a white Porsche 911. We mapped the kit out by hand.
The Brief
We love working on classic cars. Phil started Sign Rite Grafix in 1985 pinstriping cars by hand, so when this job came in, we were thrilled.
The Martini stripe was a factory option on these cars, ordered under the code M42, rather than a separate limited edition. Because it was only ever an option, nobody knows exactly how many cars left the factory with it. That makes a genuine-looking Martini stripe rare, and worth getting right.
Kits are hard to come by, and in our research we found many that differed from the original. So we decided to make our own.
What We Made
Armed with original photos and Martini colour swatches, we mapped the Martini stripe out on the car itself, so the kit would fit this body exactly:
We masked out the outline of the stripe directly on the bodywork.
We took a tracing of that outline, laid it flat and photographed it ready for digitising.
We redrew the outline digitally and filled in all the Martini line detailing, checked against the original kit measurements.
We set the file up for printing and cutting.
The finished kit covers both sides of the car and the lid. It fits 911 models from 1975 to 1989, including the 930 Turbo, and matches Porsche part number 911 559 017 00.
The Install
Once the decals were printed and cut, we fitted them to the 911 by hand. Each piece follows the curve of the doors and the rear arches, so the Martini stripe flows along the car the way it did on the factory cars.
The Result
A Martini stripe that looks the way it did when it left the factory, with the red and dark blue lines running cleanly along the side and sweeping up over the rear arch.
